-The following is an article from "Living Your Leadership Legacy."

Today, leaders' roles are constantly changing and fluctuating, often playing the roll of director, coach, facilitator and mentor depending on the situation and challenges their employees face. They must be able to identify when their team demonstrates the knowledge and business success that will allow the leader to progress to the new role. The following is a guide for leaders to identify responsibilities and behaviors necessary to effectively fulfill each role.

As a Director the role is...
... to make the decisions inherent in the leadership role and direct others in their responsibilities
... to communicate what must happen, establish very clear parameters and provide an explanation of why it is needed
... to set the standard by being a role model, before they can effectively provide performance feedback to others
... to utilize strong interpersonal skills to engage employees in successful implementation of the directives

As a Coach the role is...
... to teach new skills, both technical and non-technical as required to achieve defined business results
... to provide an environment of continuous learning which encourage risk-taking and positive learning experiences, even from less than successful attempts
... to provide developmental feedback and recognition on the effective application of those new skills, in order to sustain their utilization and development
... to role model those desired skills and engage the full participation of their team members

As a Facilitator the role is...
... to guide team members through their processes or issues by providing the support, resources, and the time to accomplish them
... to identify and manage resistance so that the team advances
... to engage the involvement of all those concerned
... to assist with the successful outcomes of the process without manipulating its results
... to utilize strong interpersonal skills and act as a role model

As a Mentor the role is...
... to act as a resource of knowledge and experience
... to assist in the growth and development of others as they identify their aspirations and goals for higher achievement
... to act as a role model of what others may achieve
... to challenge their mentee to move beyond their comfort zone and reach for something outside of their immediate skill level
... to utilize their interpersonal skills to assist others in personal discovery
